Best Types of Plants to Keep in Your Cabin
After you set up your construction for your custom cabin, it’s time to start decorating! Our specialists at Ormeida Cabins love seeing how new cabin owners spruce up their homes to fit their personalities. We all have our own style for decorating our space, but who could say no to indoor house plants?
The best kinds of plants for cabins are the ones that are relatively easy to take care of. Our team would love to share 3 kinds of plants you can use to bring the outdoors inside.
Hoyas
No matter what kind of home you have, hoyas are great additions. They are beautiful and require little care. They can be watered when the top inch of their soil dries out with 2 hours of direct morning sunlight. Depending on the kind of hoya, you can grow them in pots, small trellises or hanging baskets.
Some hoyas you can choose from include:
- Hoya carnosa
- Hoya kerrii
- Hoya ‘compacta’ (Hindu rope)
- Hoya Krimson Queen
- Hoya wayetii
These plants are great for your cabin home because they don’t take up much room and can grow happily in a window. They can withstand most indoor environments when properly taken care of. If you find a nice space on a windowsill or in an east-facing window, try adding in one of these hoyas.
Tropical And Subtropical Plants
Tropical and subtropical plants work very well for cabins. These kinds of plants are great in humid environments, which make for great house plants. Just like hoyas, they need routine water to survive and bright, indirect sunlight. Tropical and subtropical plants include:
- Snake plants
- Monstera
- Chinese evergreen
These plants prefer to be in warmer temperatures. So during the summer, you can move them to your porch. During the winter, however, it’s best to keep them indoors, away from any cold spots in your cabin and supplement with a grow light.
Depending on the kind of tropical or subtropical plant, your water schedule will vary. Add greenery to your custom cabins with plants that thrive in indoor humidity.
Hanging Or Climbing Plants
If you want to hang your pots or run them through a trellis, there are excellent options for your cabin. For Texas cabins, these two kinds of plants would work great for your home.
Spider Plants
If you see a hanging pot in a Texas home, you’re most likely seeing a spider plant. They are easy to grow in Texas because they thrive in indirect sunlight. Afternoon sunlight can burn off the leaves of a spider plant, so it’s best to place them in an east-facing window.
These plants enjoy drying out their soil, so you can water them when the top inch of soil feels dry. They are easy to grow and look great in your cabin!
Ivy
Ivy, especially pothos ivy, is great for custom cabins. They grow in a hanging basket or as a climbing plant.
They can grow in most lighting conditions, so you don’t have to worry about giving them too much or too little sunlight. They also cleanse the air of pollutants, which improves your home’s indoor air quality. Add pothos ivy into your cabin to freshen up the air!
